Niagara Falls & Niagara-on-the-Lake Travel Diary!

Back in July, I visited Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake for a long weekend trip. I know we’re heading into cold weather, but now is the best time to plan your summer trips to get you through winter. If you’re planning a trip to Ontario, I hope you’ll find my travel diary helpful. Now, onto the highlights of the trip!

we couldn’t have been luckier with this!

We arrived relatively late on Friday evening, so we hit the falls first since it was on our way to our hotel. Niagara Falls is surprisingly very pretty in the dark because colorful lights light up the falls.

The picture above was actually taken on the last day of the trip on our way home. As you can see, the photo was taken from the New York side of Niagara Falls. We got so lucky with the weather – and the rainbow was the perfect ending to our weekend trip!

Afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales hotel

a nap dress is the only suitable attire for afternoon tea

Our Saturday afternoon activi-tea was probably my favorite thing about the trip. We enjoyed afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel in historic downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake. We had a delicious tea service with finger sandwiches, desserts, scones, and sparkling wine. The tea room itself is beautiful, too.

Shaw Cafe & Wine Bar

After tea, we wandered around downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake. There are a lot of different shops and restaurants you can pop into – the downtown area is very walkable. Then, we came across the historic Shaw Cafe and Wine Bar and decided to stop for a drink. I can’t speak to the food, but the French 75 I got was good.

Wine tasting – a must in Niagara Falls

wearing a nap dress again!

The next day, we did a wine tasting at Inniskillin. If you’re in the Niagara region, wine tasting is non-negotiable. There are so many different wineries to choose from, and you really can’t go wrong. You can see our wine tasting above, complete with a cheese box. My favorite wine was the rose (no surprise there). We ended up purchasing a few different bottles of wine to take home as souvenirs.

Farm fresh produce

local peaches are a must!

Obviously, this depends on the time of year but I recommend stopping by a market for local produce. I purchased peaches and made a burrata and arugula salad when I got home.

The Old Winery

it’s been months and i’m still thinking about this pizza

On the last night of our trip, we stopped by The Old Winery just outside downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake. We had stopped in for a quick glass of wine the day before, but the wood-fired pizzas looked so good that we knew we had to come back the next night for dinner. And the pizza did not disappoint – I would definitely recommend having dinner and drinks here.

Overall, I had a great time. I would love to go back and spend more time someday. I hope you enjoyed this Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake travel diary!
